Best Weekend Getaways in Europe 2026 - Short Breaks Worth Taking

These are the European weekend getaways worth taking in 2026.

🇵🇹 Porto, Portugal- The Perfect City Break

Porto is consistently voted one of Europe's most beautiful cities and in 2026 it has the energy to match. The historic Ribeira district along the Douro River, the extraordinary azulejo tile architecture, the port wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia across the river, the food scene that has exploded over the last five years- Porto rewards a long weekend more generously than almost any other European city.

Don't miss: The São Bento railway station- one of the most beautiful buildings in Europe. A port wine tasting at Taylor's or Graham's. The Livraria Lello bookshop. A boat trip on the Douro at golden hour.

Best for: Couples, solo travellers, friend groups. Any age.

🇪🇸 San Sebastián, Spain- For the Serious Food Lover

San Sebastián has more Michelin-starred restaurants per square metre than almost anywhere on earth. But beyond the fine dining- the pintxos culture of the old town, where every bar has a counter of extraordinary small plates, makes eating here an experience that continues from noon until midnight. La Concha beach in the bay is one of the most beautiful urban beaches in Europe. The surrounding Basque countryside is spectacular.

Don't miss: The pintxos bars of Parte Vieja starting at 7pm. Mount Igueldo for views over the bay. A day trip to the Rioja wine region an hour south.

Best for: Food-focused travellers, couples, groups of friends.

🇸🇮 Ljubljana, Slovenia- Europe's Most Underrated Capital

Ljubljana is tiny, walkable, extraordinarily charming, and almost entirely overlooked by mainstream tourism. The medieval castle above the city, the baroque old town, the outdoor café culture along the Ljubljanica River, and the proximity to Lake Bled- one of the most photogenic places in Europe, 45 minutes away- make this an exceptional long weekend destination.

Don't miss: Lake Bled at dawn before the tour groups arrive. The Central Market on a Saturday morning. The castle at sunset with wine from a local vineyard.

Best for: Travellers who want beauty without crowds. Couples. Photographers.

🇲🇹 Malta- History, Sun, and Extraordinary Value

Malta punches far above its weight as a weekend destination. Three islands, 7,000 years of history, the walled capital of Valletta which is one of the most concentrated collections of Baroque architecture in the world, crystalline Mediterranean water, and a warm welcome for English-speaking visitors given the country's British colonial history. It is also significantly more affordable than most Mediterranean destinations.

Don't miss: The Blue Lagoon on Comino island- one of the most beautiful natural swimming spots in the Mediterranean. The ancient temples of Ħaġar Qim, older than Stonehenge and the Pyramids. Valletta's UNESCO-listed streets at night.

Best for: History lovers, beach seekers, budget-conscious travellers who still want quality.

🇳🇴 Bergen, Norway- For the Dramatic Escape

Bergen is the gateway to the Norwegian fjords and one of the most dramatically beautiful cities in Northern Europe. The Bryggen Wharf- a UNESCO World Heritage site of colourful medieval wooden buildings- is iconic. The surrounding fjords are accessible by boat or by the famous Flåm Railway, one of the most spectacular train journeys in the world. In summer the light barely fades and the landscape is extraordinary.

Don't miss: The Flåm Railway to Myrdal. A fjord cruise to Nærøyfjord. The fish market at the harbour for the freshest seafood in Europe.

Best for: Nature lovers, couples, adventurous solo travellers. Summer or winter- both are spectacular for different reasons.

🇨🇿 Český Krumlov, Czech Republic- A Fairytale Town

Two and a half hours from Prague by bus, Český Krumlov is a medieval town so perfectly preserved and so extraordinarily beautiful that it feels like walking into a film set. The Baroque castle overlooking the town, the river looping around the old town in a horseshoe bend, the cobbled streets entirely free of modern intrusion- this is one of the great hidden gems of Central Europe.

Don't miss: The castle and its Baroque theatre, one of the best preserved in Europe. Kayaking or rafting the Vltava River through the town. Staying overnight when the day tourists leave and the town becomes completely peaceful.

Best for: History lovers, couples, first-time Central European visitors.
