Best Summer Vacation Destinations for 2026 - Sun, Sea and No Agenda

Summer 2026. The meetings are blocked out. The out-of-office is drafted. The only remaining question is where.

Not where is safe. Not where is convenient. Where will actually make you feel something- sun on your face, salt in your hair, a cold drink in your hand, no agenda, no notifications, no next thing on the list.

These are the destinations that deliver that feeling in 2026.

🇬🇷 Greek Islands- Specifically the Ones You Haven't Been To

Everyone knows Santorini. Fewer people know Milos- volcanic rock formations, beaches that look photoshopped, crystalline water, and a fraction of the crowds. Fewer still know Folegandros- tiny, whitewashed, clifftop villages, the most dramatically beautiful sunsets in the Aegean, and an atmosphere so unhurried it feels like time has slowed down. The Greek islands reward the traveller who goes one step beyond the obvious.

The move: Fly to Athens, take a ferry. Spend two nights on one island, move to the next. No fixed itinerary. Pure summer.

🇭🇷 Croatia- The Adriatic at Its Best

Croatia's Dalmatian coast is one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Europe- medieval walled cities, crystal-clear Adriatic water, islands that feel like they exist outside of time. Dubrovnik is famous for good reason. But Hvar, Vis, Korčula, and Lastovo to the south offer the same dramatic beauty with significantly fewer crowds. The food is excellent. The wine- particularly the local Plavac Mali- is exceptional.

The move: Split as your base, then island hop south. Rent a small boat for a day and find your own cove. That is the Croatian summer experience.

🇲🇽 Mexico- Specifically Bacalar

Everyone knows Cancun. Tulum is overcrowded and overpriced. But Bacalar- three hours south of Cancun- is one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena in the Americas. A lagoon of seven distinct shades of blue, so clear you can see the bottom at twelve feet. Wooden docks extending over the water. Hammocks. Perfect silence. The kind of place that makes you extend your trip by a week without hesitation.

The move: Fly into Cancun, rent a car, drive south. Stay on the lagoon. Do nothing deliberately for five days. You will feel rebuilt.

🇵🇫 French Polynesia- The Superlative Summer

For those with the budget for a genuinely transcendent summer experience- Bora Bora and Moorea in French Polynesia represent the upper limit of what a summer holiday can be. Overwater bungalows above water so clear and impossibly blue it barely seems real. Manta rays and reef sharks visible from your deck. Silence that feels physical. This is the destination that people save up for and then say it exceeded every expectation.

The move: Fly into Tahiti, island-hop to Moorea first (more intimate, fewer crowds), then Bora Bora for the final chapter. Allow two weeks minimum.

🇪🇸 Spain's Atlantic Coast- The Undiscovered Summer

While most of Europe descends on Barcelona and Madrid, Spain's northern Atlantic coast- the Basque Country, Cantabria, and Galicia- offers a completely different and arguably superior summer experience. San Sebastián has more Michelin stars per capita than almost anywhere on earth. The beaches of Cantabria are dramatic, green, and half-empty. The Camino de Santiago in Galicia is one of the great walking routes of the world. The prices are half of what the Mediterranean coast charges in July and August.

The move: Fly into Bilbao, eat your way through San Sebastián, drive west along the coast. End in Santiago de Compostela. This is Spain as it actually lives.
